Day 15

In your own space, create your own challenge. What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Is there something fun you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy if they gave it a go? Dare your friends to try it out, and have fun with it. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

My challenge is fairly simple: do something nice for someone. Leave a positive comment. Fill a prompt request. Make an icon. Rec their fic...whatever you can do to brighten someone's day.

Day 14
In your own space, write a love letter. Write it Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, or to your flist. Share you love and squee as loud as you want to. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Dear Fandom-In-General,

Thank you for being the place I can go when I need to escape, the place where I feel free to be as weird as I want, and where it's okay to
"obsess" over things--comics, tv shows, movies, etc--that other people consider trivial. Thank you for encouraging creativity and for being more accepting than society as a whole. You're not perfect, of course. But as messy--and yes, wanky--as you can occasionally get, you're still one of the best places to be, filled with some of the best people one could possibly know.

Sincerely,
Carrie

Day 13: In your own space, talk about setting yourself a fannish goal. Big or small, it doesn't matter. Some great examples include: complete a bingo, sign-up for a Big Bang, write that fic you've been thinking about for years, podfic that story that you love, make a fanmix for your fandom, post that bit of meta or reclist you keep postponing. Maybe resolve to be better at leaving feedback, or answering comments. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I've been meaning to make a general goals and resolutions post for 2014 (and yeah, it's a little sad and telling that the month is half over and I still haven't gotten around to it!).

As far as my fannish goals...

-Finish the fic I start
-Meet my deadlines
-Write more in general
-Find a good beta reader or two
-Comment more EVERYWHERE
-Make some more fandom friends (more of a wish than a goal)
-Try my hand at creating podfic
-Brush up on my (close to nonexistent) Photoshop skills

Today's challenge: Day 11

Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing or trope. Try creating a different kind of fanwork. Or check out some types of fanworks that are new to you.

For day 11, I decided to check out one of the last movies I ever thought I could get fannish over: Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.

I'd watched part of it before and couldn't really get into it, but today I decided to watch the whole thing. And I'm happy I did! It turned out to be a lot of fun--campy, funny, gory, and fabulously cracked out in all the best ways. It may never be something I go full fan for, but I liked it enough to head over to AO3 in search of fic.

Which leads me to...

Court and Spark by Nerissa
Summary: Hansel is consistently terrible at flirting. There's a reason for that.
Hansel/Gretel

While I'm not normally a fan of incest ships, this fic really worked for me on almost every level. Aside from some time/space issues in the beginning, the writing is solid and engrossing. The characterization is on point, and the fic manages to capture the same funny/gross tone as the movie. (It's also a Yuletide 2013 story.)

I'm working on a few H&G icons for the "creating a different kind of fanwork" part of today's Snowflake Challenge. I haven't busted out Photoshop in a while, so they'll probably suck, but...oh well. :)
